BACKGROUND

PLIP utilizes the concept of industrial training undertaken by students in tertiary institutions before graduation. It provides space and platform for students to explore, understand and gain experience of the real work situations in preparation for graduation and work life ahead.

Based on the scenario over the last few years, it was found that the students from public higher education institutions (IPTAs) are more comfortable working in the public sector while students from private higher education institutions (IPTS) are more interested to work in the private sector. This atmosphere if left uninterrupted, may disrupt the interaction and jeopardise the unity prevailing among multi-racial executives in the country.

This unhealthy situation can undermine the relationship and harmony of the society as there are criticisms directed at non-bumiputera companies as being less interested in hiring bumiputera workers in their company. This situation can create misunderstandings, misfortune and prejudice among multi-racial people and may also raise misleading view against the Government that the public sector is only giving preference to bumiputeras. This lamentation not only can impede unity in the society but more worrying it can affect the nation's economic development.

On that basis, the Department takes a proactive step towards restoring the widening gaps among different ethnic groups through the implementation of PLIP by providing a platform for Bumiputera students to undertake industrial training in non-Bumiputera companies while providing opportunities for non-bumiputera students to participate in industrial training at bumiputera companies.

The harmonisation among multi-racial workers in the companies is a two-pronged achievement of this programme as it empowers the students through the transfer of technology and skills from the companies as well as enhances the unity among them. Therefore, the programme not only prospers the community directly but more importantly increases the national productivity.
